Dr. Geoffrey Westrich Named Top Doctor in Orthopedic Surgery in New York Magazine's Best Doctors Guide

(New York, N.Y. June 9, 2010) Dr. Geoffrey Westrich has been named a top orthopedic surgeon in New York magazine's latest guide to the "Best Doctors in New York."

Dr. Westrich is an orthopedic surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery whose practice is dedicated exclusively to hip and knee injuries, pain and arthritis. In addition to his office at the Manhattan hospital, Dr. Westrich sees patients in an affiliated office in Fresh Meadows, Queens.

Physicians named in the Best Doctors guide are selected based on a survey of their peers, taking into account professional qualifications, reputation and patient care skills, according to New York magazine.

"I'm honored to be among the select group of physicians named in this guide," said Dr. Westrich, who is co-director of joint replacement research at Hospital for Special Surgery. He is also an associate professor of orthopedic surgery at Weill Medical College of Cornell University.

Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Westrich dedicates his practice to hip and knee injuries and disease, arthritis management, minimally invasive hip and knee surgery, hip resurfacing, joint replacement, complex hip and knee reconstruction and revision surgery. He is considered a leading researcher in blood clot prevention following joint replacement and has received numerous awards for his work.

In addition to his medical degree, which he received from Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Westrich has a background in engineering. Upon graduating from Tufts School of Engineering, he was invited to join Eta Kappa Nu, a prestigious engineering honors society. His degree in engineering comes into play when he is called on to help design new and improved joint replacements and surgical instrumentation.

Dr. Westrich completed his orthopedic surgery residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, followed by a hip and knee fellowship at Hospital for Special Surgery. He belongs to a number of professional societies, including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Association, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Arthritis Foundation and the Eastern Orthopedic Association.

Dr. Westrich is often called upon by the media for his expertise. His successful efforts to save a woman's leg from amputation from the hip were featured as a "medical miracle" in New York magazine in 2006.
